My Iceberg

Events - People get sick, obese

  • People want quick fixes, doctors oblige with drugs

  • People make bad food choices leading to poor immune function

  • USDA Dietary Guidelines are flawed, leading to poor choices by consumers and by food industry

Underlying Structures

  • Stores are filled with processed foods of poor nutritional quality

  • Government supports commodity crops turned into these processed foods

  • Food industry uses cheap gimmicks to sell more poor quality food - MSG, HFCS

  • Scientists are supported by the food & ag industries yielding research that fits the mental models

  • Political decisions influence decisions that should be based on science.

Mental Models

  • People want cheap food - love bargains

  • Politicians want to gain approval, promote cheap food

  • Food industry wants to cuts costs, make a profit, sell more food

  • Scientists love/do 'whiz bang' research - ignore the old boring stuff that is actually filled with wisdom

  • Agriculture aims for 'efficiency' using modern chemistry and machines

  • Politicians are under the influence of big money.
